Well, ESOT is proud to welcome them too with yet another innovation: Transplant Live. Those who cannot make it to Brussels will be able to follow live a limited selection of the best sessions of ESOT Brussels 2015. For free, from anywhere in the world. Not as good as the ‘real thing’, but certainly an exciting experience they will not soon forget.

What can they expect from Transplant Live?
ESOT will be broadcasting during five selected times, covering all global timezones, on 13, 14, and 15 September. Each show will offer a unique combination of the most thought-provoking live performances on stage, alternated with more in-depth interviews from our Transplant Live Studio.
So if they are a transplant researcher, physician, surgeon, pharmacist or coordinator wanting to be on the front-edge of their profession (just like you!), they should join ESOT online!

How can they participate in Transplant Live?
They can participate online anytime, anyplace, anywhere. The only thing they need is a stable internet connection and a pc, laptop, tablet or smartphone. Then they should just visit, quickly sign up and enjoy.

John Forsythe, ESOT President, will explore the major issues in transplantation together with representatives from transplantation societies in America, Asia, Middle East and Latin America. From basic science challenges in transplantation today to clinical issues that need to be overcome in solid organ transplantation. About different views on increasing the levels of deceased donor donation and on living donation: ethically unjustified or the golden answer?

Global warming in transplantation:
Improving the organ quantity and quality.

Storing on ice is still the gold standard to safeguard our organs, despite the fact it can damage precious tissues. Therefore a lot of effort is put into advancing organ preservation methods. This will not only yield more and higher-quality organs, it will also buy us more time. Will there soon be a way to protect our treasures forever?

Of men and machine: how close are we to copying God?

In the future our human bodies will no longer be needed to rescue other humans. Instead, we will be able to simply print our transplants. In fact, the promise of 3D bioprinting is that it can provide us with any human tissue in any shape or form we need, so that we can replace any organ at will. But wait a minute before you start ordering yours, as we’re not quite there yet. Perhaps the solution comes faster from the field of robotics: What about artificially designing any organ in a microelectromechanical way and transplant these hyper-technical implants into our bodies? It seems the ultimate solution to the shortage of organs. But do we really want to become cyborgs in near the future?

The quest for biomarkers:
Potential of personized medicine.

Biomarkers are indicators of biological processes within organs that can be used to determine what treatment a certain patient needs. They can also predict the effects of drugs and contribute to dose selection. The only difficulty is finding these very specific molecules: Hello 'needles in a haystack', where are you hiding? 

Transplantation in a digital world:
From social media and big data to stem cells and genetic modification.

The future is now, as scientists are working on mind-blowing strategies to overcome the backlog of patients waiting for donors. With the help of social media and big data analysis we can already increase the amount of donors in 2015. Next, we can prevent injuries on organs with help of state-of-the-art genetic modification techniques. And last but certainly not least we are even working on growing completely new organs. Sounds provoking? Therefore we must give some serious thoughts to ethical issues as well.
